The Tile Council of North America recommends a maximum total load deflection of L/360 and a maximum joist spacing of 16" on-center. For more information, please see the 2010 TCA Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation, Tile Council of North America.
The Marble Institute of America recommends a total load deflection of L/720 for floor joists spanning 14' or less and supporting stone tile (includes marble). Spans greater than 14' require additional deflection considerations. (Installation of Modular Stone Floor Tile: Thin-Set Method, Marble Institute of America, 1998)
