Re-sizing RedLam™ LVL

The strength of RedLam™ LVL is consistent through the cross section. Re-sizing is an option with LVL, unlike glulam beams. For example, an 8" piece of LVL can be ripped down from a 9" and the design properties for an 8" are appropriate. (Note, however, that the design properties are NOT directly proportional to the ratio of depths.)

Question : Do two pieces of 8" LVL, side-by-side, have the same bending strength as a single 16"?

Answer: No. Though the double 8" has equal shear strength, it has only about 50% the bending strength and 25% the stiffness of the single 16"!
