You may use RedSpec™ to analyze the effect of holes placed in the web of I-joist products.
Holes may be added clicking "+ Add Hole". New holes are added to the bottom of the list.
Remove a hole by selecting the row that holds the desirec hole, then click "Remove Hole".
Round, square, and rectangular holes in the joist web may be evaluated using RedSpec™. See the product literature for general I-joist web hole guidelines.
RedSpec™ hole input is limited to the following parameters:
Note: A "duct hole" is a special case of rectangular holes. When the height of a rectangular hole is equal to the depth of the joist web, this is called a "duct hole."
The hole height must be less than or equal to web depth.
Duct holes are not allowed in joists more than 20" deep.
The width of a duct hole cannot exceed 1.5 times the joist depth.
The width of a duct hole in a Red-I45L™ joist cannot exceed 14".
The width of a duct hole in Red-I45™ and Red-I58™ joists cannot exceed 18".
The width of a duct hole in Red-I65™, Red-I90™, Red-I90H™, and Red-I90HS™ joists cannot exceed 24".
The center of a round hole must be at least two diameters from the end of the member.
The edge of a square or rectangular hole must be at least 24" from the end of the member.
The center of a round hole must be at least two diameters from an intermediate support.
The center of a square or rectangular hole must be at least 14" from an intermediate support.
No more than 3 holes are allowed in a member.
No more than 1 square or rectangular hole is allowed in a member.
Round and square holes must be at least 2 widths from an adjacent hole, based on the width of the largest hole.
Rectangular holes must be at least 2 units from an adjacent hole. A "unit" is the greater of the width and height.
Select one of the three alternatives available below:
Round - The program will prompt you for the diameter of the hole. The width will be skipped. The centerline location is the distance from the left end of the member to the centerline of the hole.
Square - The program will prompt you for the height of the hole. The width will be skipped. The centerline location is the distance from the left end of the member to the centerline of the hole.
Rectangular - The program will prompt you for the height of the hole. The width is the hole dimension along the member. The centerline location is the distance from the left end of the member to the centerline of the hole.
Type the round hole diameter or the hole height for a square or rectangular hole.
Enter the dimension of the hole along the member. It is only required for rectangular holes.
Type the centerline location which is the distance from the left end of the member to the centerline of the hole. You may enter the location in a number of ways. For example, if you would like to enter a location of 20'-6.0", you may key in:
20'-6.0"
20'6.0"
20'6"
20'6
20.5
20-6
20 6
19 18
20.25 3
246
Regardless of how you enter it, upon leaving this field, it will be displayed as 20'- 6.0". The location must be less than the total length of the member. If you change the member length after entering the load, the load may be affected. Locations that are less than or equal to the member length (before and after the change) are unaffected. If the revised member length is less than the load location, the load will be removed.
You may add a descriptive note which will be displayed on the printed calculation.
