Organizations such as the International Code Council (ICC) publish building codes as a guide for building officials to regulate construction practices (example : International Building Code, or IBC). Designed solely as a reference for the inspector, these codes are not intended to prevent the use of any material, provided its use has been authorized by the building official. Code reports provide the building official specific information about an alternate material not listed in the published building code book.
The inspector may use any reference he or she deems adequate to approve the use of any construction material, whether it is professional experience, product literature, the published building code or a proprietary code report.
